Academy update | March 2016
David Cotton   Each year March is always a time for new beginnings and endings during the school year. This is exciting in both respects as our Year 9s make the first step to determining their GCSE pathway choices, whilst our Year 11s are working hard to ensure that they have a successful conclusion to their examinations! At Tuxford I would like to reassure all students and parents that staff are 100% supportive in helping to ensure a positive GCSE journey at school. I would also like to remind you that all students (but particularly Year 11s) are able to stay after school to get any extra support that they need with their studies or revision. Students need to discuss individual requirements with their teachers, who I know will be happy to help in any way they can. We also have designated quiet areas around school for revision, which I know our hard working students always appreciate.

Year 7 Charity Readathon

At Tuxford Academy we are serious about enriching children's lives through reading and promoting a love of books. This year, as part of World Book Day celebrations, we have launched the Year 7 Readathon. Students have had special library lessons to inform them about the importance of reading and how we as a school assess their progress throughout the year. To encourage more participation and challenge in reading, we have chosen to support this worthwhile 'Readathon' charity for the first time, which helps to raise money for new books and readers for children whilst in hospital. As ever, we would really appreciate parent/carer encouragement of reading at home, which as we all know has endless benefits to students' academic progress and achievement levels.
Industry Master Class
Year 9 Tuxford Academy students were engaged in a Young Enterprise Industry Master Class on Curriculum Day in February. They were able to gain valuable employability skills through a challenging, but fun day, led by senior representatives from the world of construction and industry.

Throughout the day our students demonstrated and honed skills including:
  • Working as a team
  • Utilising existing skills
  • Tackling real problems and issues
  • Exploring career opportunities in a company structure
A fantastic and inspirational day was had by all.

At Tuxford we are proud of the fantastic range of additional experiences our Curriculum Days are able to offer our students. This term our Year 7 and 8 students experienced an exciting, unique theatre-production about the Tour de France and designed and created their own Arc de Triomphe, as well as learning sign-language and braille. Year 9 were involved in 'Enterprise Day' and benefitted from a number of external speakers, whilst our Year 10s had a whole-day of bespoke Science input. Year 11 were able to gain valuable exam experiences in English and Maths and finally our students in Years 12/13 had access to a number of talks focused on stress management, financial management and revision techniques, as well as a variety of interesting trips such as a trip to London and Nottingham Galleries of Justice.
