Academy update | November/December 2016
It's been a pleasure this term to welcome so many special guests in to our Academy.

The positive life-affirming affect it has on our students is unquantifiable and I know from speaking to many of the students, after the assemblies and events, that these inspirational people make a real difference in our young students' lives.

Finally, we are always keen to speak to parents/carers and welcome them in to the Academy. Our new Parent Steering Group is an ideal opportunity for us to share our thoughts and create new mutually beneficial best practice. Please get in touch if you are interested in joining.

Flying high with Eddie the Eagle

Last year's Y11 students gathered at the Academy's prestigious annual Celebration of Achievement Awards evening. This year we were honoured to meet Eddie the Eagle, Olympic Ski Jumping athlete whose moving speech highlighted how hard work, positive thinking and focus on your goals is so important for all our students in order to be successful and achieve what they want out of life. Categories this year at the event included: Highest Achiever, Highest Progress, School Community, College Recognition and 100% Attendance awards. A very special well done to all of our past Y11 winners – it was a great way to celebrate their outstanding successes with their friends and families.

The brave
and the good

This year, our Remembrance Event was on Friday 11th November 2016. Each year we invite members of our local community including Forces personnel and Veterans to join us for special assemblies in our main hall.

Rememberance Event
Our special guests this year were Mr Harry Mays from Tuxford who received the Légion d'Honneur, the highest recognition awarded by France. He was awarded this medal for bravery during the Normandy Landings on June 6th 1944; and Mrs Winnie Timson, also from Tuxford, who served in the ATS as an ambulance driver during WWII.

"The students had a 2 minute silence to remember those that had fought and lost their lives. 1500 students stood still – it was very powerful." Mrs Kerry Nichol, Assistant Principal.

In addition to remembering the fallen, this year's theme was about the animals that lost their lives in war and the recipients of the PDSA Dickin Medal. 'I never realised that animals receive medals in the same way soldiers do.' Y8 Student.

At Tuxford Academy we strongly value relationships with our parents/carers and so maintaining open lines of communication between the Academy and our parents/carers is imperative. Accurate records of email addresses and mobile phone numbers are vital, in order to successfully keep in touch with our parents/carers. PARS Insight allows you to maintain your contact details with us, ensuring that all communications we send out will reach you successfully.

We also try and anticipate parental requirements for information by placing relevant resources on the Academy website (staff are also happy to respond to emails from parents where more specific information is needed). For example, in the case of absence information or guidance, our Student Welfare Manager, Leona Ashley can be contacted directly on her school email address:
Loving our new Media Hub

Our new Media Hub is now fully functioning and enabling new courses in Photography and Digital Media to be delivered at P16. Both new courses have been oversubscribed and students are relishing the new challenges of working with industry standard technology. The facilities are also benefitting our GCSE students, who have the opportunity to develop images and ideas using Photoshop. Photography students have also been put through their paces with a series of skill-building projects. Look out for their work in the Creative Arts showcase exhibition in the last week of term!
